Early detection is the way to go.

Almost every month since September, I've been dedicating a post supporting the fight against Breast Cancer.

Current statistics say that 40,000 women die from breast cancer every year and that one in eight women either has or will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

The best way to avoid death is early detection.

Essentially there are two types of breast cancer, in situ breast cancer and invasive breast cancer.

In situ (noninvasive) breast cancer refers to cancer that stays with*in* the *sit*e it originated - basically, the cancer cells haven't spread to the surrounding breast tissue.

The most common type of noninvasive breast cancer is ductal carcinoma in situ  (DCIS).  DCIS is the earliest form of breast cancer that originates within the milk ducts and the cell haven't learned to go past the duct wall to surrounding tissues.  From what we've gathered from research, if DCIS is not removed and dealt with, a large percentage of women will develop a form of invasive breast cancer.

Mammograms are especially good at detecting DCIS because of the calcium that is left behind by the abnormal cells.

The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink window in the middle).

This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Boobs on Ice.

Frozen Pea Fund

Today is the 6th Frozen Pea Friday.   Every Friday a video is posted online at http://frozenpeafund.com/ and acts as a mile marker for how long the Frozen Pea Fund has been raising money for breast cancer research.

The Frozen Pea fund was inspired by Susan Reynolds who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.  She tells her story via her blog, Boobs on Ice.

I admire Susan for her courage and her willingness to share her story online.  What is just as impressive is the amount of support for her and this very noble cause.  Add to the fact that's it's all due to social media.  Twitter, blogging, flickr, etc.

me w/ peasWhy frozen peas?  Susan explains here.

There's also a flickr group for "PEAple" who have pea-vatars.

Which at the time of writing this has 331 members.

I wish Susan the best of luck as well as those who are in similar situations or have a loved one that is.

Hey, here's something you can do...

...click on a link to support the fight against Breast Cancer.

Every year over 40,000 women die from breast cancer... one in eight women either has or will develop breast cancer if their lifetime.

If detected early, survival rate is increased dramatically. So, the reason for this post is that I committed to telling at least 10 people, at least once a month. The goal is to continue doing this until I run The Columbus Race for the Cure in 2008.

So, Please tell ten friends to tell ten today!

Hey... while you're wasting time...

...click on a link to support the fight against Breast Cancer. Every year over 40,000 women die from breast cancer... one in eight women either has or will develop breast cancer if their lifetime. Think about that statistic... here's an example... Take 40 women that you know... Statistically, five(5) of 'em will be affected by breast cancer. Frankly, that's five too many. If detected early, survival rate is increased dramatically. So, the reason for this post is that I committed to telling at least 10 people, at least once a month. The goal is to continue doing this until I run The Columbus Race for the Cure in 2008. So, Please tell ten friends to tell ten today!

A rerun post... my public service annoucement.

This is my little opportunity to provide a public service to some of my readers... the link below is a great handy-dandy little resource that can keep you in the know when it comes to setting up your next get together of after hour meetings.

And, as a shout out to Mr Austin, The Library is not listed within, but it should be noted that it's a great place to hang out during OSU Home Games... for $7/pitcher o' beer (ALL THE TIME), you can't go wrong.

Columbus Happy Hour Listing

Also, kids... remember to drink responsibly.
