It's not alright...

So today's the last day of Analog TV... NOT

The U.S. Congress set the TODAY as the deadline for broadcast TV stations to no longer send their signals across the analog airwaves; however, that deadline has been adjusted and the true and new deadline is now June 12th 2009.

What's that mean? It means that some of the full-power broadcast television stations have the option to terminate their analog broadcast, while others will execute their transition throughout the rest of 1st half 2009.

I'm spoiled having cable, so I never really kept tabs on the whole DTV thing. I do, however, enjoy fun and neat things that come as a result of change.

Included, herein, is The Simpsons New Main Title created in response to the HD change over.

An adventure in stop motion video.

Last night we put together a little stop motion video made from legos and the kids' imagination.

Tools we used:

• Canon Digital Rebel XT Camera
• Mini Tripod
• Paper
• Crayons / Markers
• Legos
• iPhoto '09
• iMovie '09
• and unbridled imagination

Overall, we took over 200 pictures, but ended up only using 115.   

The process of using both iPhoto with iVideo (both within the iLife '09 Suite) was pretty straightforward and simple.

THE STEPS

Basically, I imported the images into iPhoto creating a new event, then I opened iVideo and created a new project.

I set the following Project Properties (found in File -> Project Properties... ) as follows:

Then, I opened up for the photo browser, selected the images and dragged them into the iMovie project work space.

Then using the Voiceover button (shortcut key "O"), had Sher and the kids do their narrative magic.

Lastly, added some titles, transition and published the darn thing.

THE RESULTS

The result is this video, which is the kids' version of how Spongebob and Patrick first met.

Non-Newtonian Fluid: A Friday Activity

My business partner spends a lot of time surfing the web and finds the most interesting stuff. I don't know how; he just does. Sometime ago he found and shared videos about non-newtonian fluid.

So, this past Friday night, Viv and I thought we'd give it a try.

For those of you that don't know. A non-newtonian fluid is a fluid whose viscosity is not a single constant value, meaning that the relation between sheer stress and strain rate in non-linear.

HUH?!?!

Basically, in regards to our activity, our fluid acted like a solid when struck or abrupt force was applied. When left alone or little force was given it acted as a liquid. Check out this wiki entry if you're interested in more information.

Just in case any parents are interested in trying this, just know this:

• it's definitely a fun and easy activity to do at home,
• It's non-toxic,
• can be very messy, and
• skip the food coloring. Viv and Pxian's hands will be green for the next week.

Bacon Explosion: The Experience

So my business partner found the recipe to Bacon Explosion on bbqaddicts.com.  It's a recipe guaranteed to get you to "Pork Nirvana in no time flat."  Also, it's a recipe unapologetic for the amount of pork meat required to make it, about four pounds.

It was all fun and games until my wife decides that she wants to actually cook the thing.  I should add here that we deviated from the recipe, we had to.  The main reason for this is that we did NOT have a smoker. ;)

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.   And my last post rolled of the front page of my blog, so, I'm just going to reiterate the fact that survival rate for breast cancer (or for any cancer, really) is best when found early.

The abuse has got to stop.

Every so often I stumble across an online video that makes me sick to my stomach.  This one is something so horrifying, I had issues deciding whether or not I should share it on my blog.  The blatant display of injustice, inhumanity and the "righteous" attitude that anything can be sacrificed in the name of science scoffs at all that I believe is right in this world.

View at your own risk...  it may not be suitable for young kids or for people who are easily angered.

A Formula that Appears to Work.

Here's my new formula for creating a Hot Top Forty Song...
Think of this as a follow up to the Formula doesn't work.

Prerequisite & Disclaimers

If you're a young Hollywood actress and have been on the cover of FHM or Esquire magazine, you have a 5% chance of success with this formula.  Your video will be watched; however, not by the type of audience you're hoping to attract.  Just warning you now. 

Okay, let's get started writing our new Top 40 Hit.

Step 1 - find beat

Get an electronic sound machine and find a bass beat and rhythm that would get most any three year old hop around like a bunny.  Any beat or rhythm will do...  just make sure the pace is just enough to allow the three year old to not tire out too quickly... 

In your head think "thump di di thump di di thump di di" and repeat 1000 times.  This allows you to (as they say in the industry) "feel" the music.  Now start bopping your head to the rhythm, this will get you in the mood to write the lyrics.

Step 2 - write lyrics

As you're bopping your head...  think of words that rhyme, and make special notes of any trite thoughts that everybody thinks they'd relate to. 

Here's a classic, are you pissed off at your significant other?  Great...  let's write about that...  No?  Don't worry, eventually you will be.  And besides, your music will be symbolic of war and the current state of the economy.  Focus... words that rhyme.

Hurt...  Burt...  (your boyfriend's name isn't Burt?  That's okay, the audience doesn't really care, they'll get the symbolism)

Sad... Mad...  (everyone get's sad then mad at least once in there life...  if not, they've gotten mad then sad... again who cares..  symbolism...  the audience will get it, even if you don't, plus, if they didn't they wouldn't admit it...)

Now... put it all togeter...

I loved this guy named Burt
And he's all made me Sad
Now I'm truly Hurt
So, all my girlfriends are Mad...

Don't worry about grammar or proper English you're an artist and this is one of your creative licenses.

Step 3 - production

This is where the magic happen.  Hirer some scantily clad models, one good looking guy (who'll play Burt), add the words "sexual undulation", *mix it all together, then serve. 

Here's a good example of a finished product:

*Please note: The Mixing part will require a high priced choreographer and a Hollywood director (b/c they *ALWAYS* know what they're doing; plus you want his interpretation of the music embedded into your audiences' brain [yes, singular])... and don't forget... undulate, undulate, undulate.

And my number one piece of advice:  Remember...  don't allow the audience to think freely, otherwise they won't continue to listen to your music.

More toys that KILL!!

I posted an entry sometime ago about Toys That Kill.  I have to tell you, I'm getting worried.  In this day and age, with the economy the way it is, the wars that are going on, the political unrest felt throughout the world...  people are getting upset.

What's worse... toys are beginning to rebel as well.

This love song was written by Sarah McLachlan to her husband.  It's an apology and thank-you song addressing the craziness and insanity that comes when life changes.  Many life changes can test even the strongest relationships.  For Sarah, her event was her pregnancy and birth of their daughter. 

From her intro in the above video, she indicates her husband got the short end of the stick, but was always there for her.  Her husband's love was the inspiration for this song.

What's my inspiration for this post?  There was a fatal accident close to the kids' school earlier today.  The thought of lives lost so suddenly always reminds me how important it is to make every day count.  More importantly I'm reminded of how especially important is it to thank the people around you who accept you for who you are and love you no matter what. 

If you put it off too long, you may never get the chance.
