It's a sad day for the guys.

After I post about Columbus's Meaty Man Mania Weekend, I stumbled across some disturbing AP Press release.

Sharen Turney, Victoria's Secret's Chief Executive, says that they've become "too sexy" and wants to get back to "[their] heritage."

"Victoria's Secret was launched with the idea that Victoria was manor-born and lived in London, Turney said."

That's her baseline for their heritage?  Plus, she wants the company to start thinking in terms of "ultra-feminine".

What's that mean?!  Manor-born London girls?!? Ultra-feminine!?!

This is one of the images I get when I image googled "manor-born london girls".  No, no... not sexy at all.

Here's what you get from an image google of "ultra feminine".

I'm so sad, I think I'm going to cry.

This weekend is for the girls...

"What about for the boys?", you might be asking.  To which I answer... "maybe?!"  but only if you're into beefy men or a handful of very beefy women.

Maybe...

21065

Not so much...

 22075

Let me explain.  This weekend, Columbus is host to three big "Man Meaty" Events.

The most popular and probably the one most people will be going to is The Arnold Classic, now known as Arnold Sports Fesitival.

Originally an event dedicated to men's body building, this 20th anniversary festival has grown to fill up both the Columbus Convention Center and the Nationwide Arena.  They now have over 18 categories of events and sports.  Event include Archery, Cheerleading, Gymnastics and Table Tennis, just to name a few.

ufc82ticketsAlso being hosted at Nationwide Arena this weekend is the UFC's Pride of a Champion.  It's the middleweight championship between Anderson Silva and Dan Henderson.  And this is a fight to watch.  The two men are forces to be reckoned with, Silva with his speed and crazy fast combos, Henderson with his brute teeth shattering strength putting them together in the cage Saturday Night, is definitely something to watch.

ohsaa_wr

Last, but definitely not least, The Ohio High School Athletic Association is having their Wrestling State Championships over at Value City Arena.  What's nice is that we have some local talent competing this year, from Hilliard Darby and Davidson, Upper Arlington and Grove City.

Can you say, holy moly?

Personally, I'm just excited to see Columbus is bringing in some money with events like this.  I'm a little weary of the downtown infrastructures being able to handle all the hustle and bustle.  Not to mention Columbus' finest being able to handle all the testosterone.

Either was it's good for us.  Bring some money in to local business, show that Columbus is just as good as any other big city for providing entertainment and hosting big events.

Will I be going out?  Probably not.  I've very much the "Beta Male" as Christopher Moore describes.

testosterone

Plus, I've got a new puppy to worry about at home.  We're working on potty training.  Fun, Fun, Fun for the Jude Man.

black_creek_043

Oh, I almost forgot to mention another event this weekend.  Every 1st weekend over every month the Short North hosts The Gallery Hop.  It's a time to celebrate art, enjoy good food, shopping and take in the Columbus atmosphere.

Happy Leap Year Day!

I'm posting this, just so I could say I have 29 posts for every day of February 2008.  I know, it's lame...  but it's the little things that makes me smile.

An article from National Geographic about Leap Year.

Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy...

Here is Jimmy's response to Sarah Silverman's little thing with Matt Damon.

I thought it was funny, plus I'm too lazy to blog about everything else going on in my life, like the new tat or the new puppy.

Games Provided By Blinkyou.com I remember way back when there was a Java version of this. Anyway, you can toss the doll around in this virtual world. So, have at it. I know, I know... it's old news... but, it's still a pretty decent time waster, especially for those long, boring conference calls.

Lindsay Lohan != Marilyn Monroe

New York Magazine (NYMag.com) commissioned Bert Stern to take photos of Lindsay Lohan.

Lindsay's photos mimics a collection of Marilyn's photos known as "The Last Sitting." Which were also taken by Bert Stern took back in 1962 (for Vogue), six weeks prior to Monroe's death.

According to the article by NYMag, Stern suspected "she has a lot more depth to her." Lohan having a very similar situation to Monroe's "tripped" up career.

I don't know, if I agree... but, then again, I'm not the artist that got to take all the naked picture of two pop icons from two totally different generations.

On a somewhat related note, Lindsay's mom approves and is happy with the photos. So, that must mean that it's okay.

You can check out Mr Stern's site at: http://www.bertstern.com/

80's TV Sunday Line Up: Knight Rider and American Gladiators!

I usually don't have the time to sit in front of the TV and watch shows.  Especially on a Sunday night.

Usually on a Sunday night, we're decompressing from an active weekend of running around with the kids.  Not to mention the production of having to get the kids ready for school the following Monday.

But, this Sunday night is an exception.  The kids don't have school tomorrow and tonight, two of my favorite 80's TV shows have been revived and are on NBC's Sunday line up.  I know, it's silly to be excited... but, still I am.

crush_003

American Gladiator

It a game show where contestants go up against these behemoth gladiators in events that tests strength, agility and speed.  The season is a single elimination tournament and tonight's 2 hour episode is for two full hours.

And, let me just say that I have a crush on Crush.  One of the lady gladiators that I wouldn't having by my side in a dark alley.

. Knight Rider

K.I.T.T. is back, completely revamp as a 2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 KR.  What's that mean?  It means, 5.4-liter, DOHC, 32-valve, 90-degree V-8, 500 horsepower w/ 480 lb.-ft. of torque.  Holy Moly!

Early detection is the way to go.

Almost every month since September, I've been dedicating a post supporting the fight against Breast Cancer.

Current statistics say that 40,000 women die from breast cancer every year and that one in eight women either has or will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

The best way to avoid death is early detection.

Essentially there are two types of breast cancer, in situ breast cancer and invasive breast cancer.

In situ (noninvasive) breast cancer refers to cancer that stays with*in* the *sit*e it originated - basically, the cancer cells haven't spread to the surrounding breast tissue.

The most common type of noninvasive breast cancer is ductal carcinoma in situ  (DCIS).  DCIS is the earliest form of breast cancer that originates within the milk ducts and the cell haven't learned to go past the duct wall to surrounding tissues.  From what we've gathered from research, if DCIS is not removed and dealt with, a large percentage of women will develop a form of invasive breast cancer.

Mammograms are especially good at detecting DCIS because of the calcium that is left behind by the abnormal cells.

The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink window in the middle).

This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Sunday Bloody Sunday

If you know me, you know I'm a big U2 fan.  I've been one ever since I was a wee lad back in the 80's.

I'm especially a lover of their older, earlier music.  You know, albums like Boy, War, and October.

One song that always get me riled up is "Sunday Bloody Sunday".

If you don't know, "This Song is Not a Rebel Song" it's was U2's nonpartisan condemnation of the 1972 Bloody Sunday in Derry, Northern Ireland.  On January 30, 1972, British Paratroopers killed 13 people (6 of which being minors) during a civil rights protest.

As the story goes, The Edge starting writing Sunday Bloody Sunday with lyrics condemning the IRA.  However due to the political air in Ireland and the possibility of the lyrics being misinterpreted as sectarian, Bono changed the lyrics to simply point out the horrors of war and violence.  One of his goals was to contrast the 1972 Bloody Sunday with Easter Sunday, a peaceful day which *both* Catholics and Protestants celebrate.

Either way, the song simply asks...  how long must we put up with people dying due to hate, prejudices and disagreements?  Why can't we just put down our guns, our bombs, and just work on getting along.

Wow... I wrote a long introduction...

I simply wanted to share this cover of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" by Saul Williams.  It was produced and arranged by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.  The song is from the album "The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust".

It addresses another kind of war that's closer to home.

Vamlumtimes Day.

HomestarRunnerClearStix I like funny things, and Homestar Runner has a funny cartoon for Valentine's day.

[[I know, it's the day after, but who cares.]]

Check it out here: Vamlumtimes Day

If you aren't familiar with Homestar Runner, it's an Flash animated internet cartoon.  Much of its humor targets 80's and 90's pop culture.

Enjoy!

Need a break?!?

Fridays, for many, happen to be a good day to screw around and catch up on pointless internet roaming.

So, If you're all caught up on current events and all your blogs have run dry and you're still looking for more Friday distractions, check out this site by Jennifer Shiman.

The site is called Angry Alien Productions and you can find it at this URL, http://www.angryalien.com/.

Jennifer has created the 30-Second Bunny Troupe who do reenactments of classic/popular movies in (you guess it) 30-Seconds.  And, yes if you're wondering, the troupe has an agent.  His name is Duck.

bnnies-exorSince 2005, Jennifer has been releasing a new reenactment once a month...  so, there's is lots to see.  Some movies that have been done include Pulp Fiction, A Christmas Story, Spider-Man and the Exorcist, just to name a few.

Starz even picked up here work for promotion on their website and on-demand channels.

I just rediscovered the site this morning and have spent the last hour review some old favorites.

Valentine's Day has the same initials as Venereal Disease.  Coincidence?!  I don't think so.

iloveyouetc

I'm not all about Hallmark's Valentine's day.  First of all, I don't need one specific day in February to tell anyone I care about them.  And most importantly, my everyday charm and wit out does any box of chocolate or flowers.

With that said, I invite you guys to visit http://vd.meish.org.  It's a site made for the Anti-Valentine.  It's funny, it's smart and makes a point.

facebookSo, instead of wasting money on silly cards, stuff animals, or flowers, send your significant someone something that'll make 'em laugh.  There's a number of different cards on the site that's guaranteed to make you chuckle inside.

10 (a) 4 (b) 2 (c) 3  (d) 5 (e) 6 (f) 1

Now add up the total number of points.

My Total: 45 points

OVER 60 POINTS : Others see you as someone they should "handle with care."  You're seen as vain, self -centered, and who is extremely dominant.  Others may admire you, wishing they could be more like you, but don't always trust you, hesitating to become too deeply involved with you.

DrPhil 51 TO 60 POINTS: Others see you as an exciting, highly volatile, rather impulsive personality; a natural leader, who's quick to make decisions, though not always the right ones. They see you as bold and adventuresome, someone who will try anything once; someone who takes chances and enjoys an adventure.  They enjoy being in your company because of the excitement you radiate.

1807001522_38672af3ff 41 TO 50 POINTS :  Others see you as fresh, lively, charming, amusing, practical, and always interesting; someone who's constantly in the center of attention, but sufficiently well balanced not to let it go to their head.  They also see you as kind, considerate, and understanding; someone who'll always cheer them up and help them out.

thumb-OprahWinfrey 31 TO 40 POINTS: Others see you as sensible, cautious, careful & practical.  They see you as clever, gifted, or talented, but modest.  Not a person who makes friends too quickly or easily, but someone who's extremely loyal to friends you do make and who expect the same loyalty in return.  Those who really get to know you realize it takes a lot to shake your trust in your friends, but equally that it takes you a long time to get over if that trust is ever broken.

21 TO 30 POINTS:  Your friends see you as painstaking and fussy.  They see you as very cautious, extremely careful, a slow and steady plodder.  It would really surprise them if you ever did something impulsively or on the spur of the moment, expecting you to examine everything carefully from every angle and then, usually decide against it. They think this reaction is caused partly by your careful nature.

UNDER 21 POINTS:  People think you are shy, nervous, and indecisive, someone who needs looking after, who always wants someone else to make the decisions & who doesn't want to get involved with anyone or anything!  They see you as a worrier who always sees problems that don't exist.  Some people think you're boring.  Only those who know you well know that you aren't.

Update on my 2008 SCUBA Resolutions.

So back on January 6th, I made a small list of SCUBA resolutions for 2008.  One of the resolutions had me doing at least one dive for each month.  For those of you lacking in mathematics skills, that would have me do at least 12 dives this year.

By no means do I think that 12 dives/year is enough to keep a diver truly fresh with the sport.  However it's better than nothing.  However, if the past 3 years are any indications, the PUE will probably out do that by 10 fold.  Yet, I digress.

The point of this post is to document my second dive this year.

I even have topside video.

The Dive Report

Dive: Circleville Twin Quarries
Date: 9 February 2008
Time: 9:45am EST
Air Temp: 34 degrees
Surface/Water Temp: 38 degrees
Exposure Protection:
  5mm full suit
  7mm boots, mittens, hood
Start/End PSI: 3100psi/2200psi
Weight: 12#
Max Depth: 20'
Dive Time: 17 minutes
Visibility: 8-10'  Very Cloudy
Experience:  The water was cold, however suit kept me pretty warm once I was acclimated to the temperature.  Experienced "ice cream" headache about 10 minutes into dive.  Swam the circuit, saw fish (blue gill, sm bass), also cleaned up around catamaran.
Areas of Improvement: Exposure protection.  Need a Dry Suit.

Megalodon Tooth

We're planning a trip to Cooper's River down in South Carolina sometime in the next couple of month.  Actually, I'm not planning the trip, our dive club is.

Unfortunately for me, I won't be able to get down there.  (Unless, we could coordinate this trip with a wedding the may have us already down their).  We'll see.

But, either way...  the only reason you diver Cooper River is for the hunt for Megalodon teeth.  What's a Megalodon?  It a HUGE prehistoric shark that lived between 16 to 1.5 million years ago.

Check out this video...  it's of a diver finding a tooth.  See if you could spot the tooth before the diver picks it up.  The video was shot in the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

There's a big difference from this video and what you'd expect in Cooper's river.

To start off, Cooper river is black water.  You'll need a dive light to see.  Your visibility is fixed to your dive light's range.  So, if you're achluophobic, lygophobia, myctophobic, nyctophobic, or  scotophobic, forget about this dive.  [[Unless you masochistic, then have at it]]

As the name of the location suggests, you are in a river, therefore your dealing with flowing water and current.  So definitely not for those with potamophobia.

There are eels and wildlife in the water.  Which has the makings for a great number of interesting head games.

And, lastly, the best part of the dive is the fact that large barges and boats are using the river for everyday traffic.  So, if your dive briefing says that you should stay deeper than 25' for at least 30 minutes, because a boat is expected by in 15 minutes, you'd best do so.

It's definitely a dive that can get your heart racing and I wouldn't say it's for everyone.  Would I do it again, most definitely...  but, I am sick in the head.

Pictured here to the left is something that The Fog happened across during our last trip to Cooper River.  Initially, we thought it was a femur from a human body.  However, Shane got it analyzed by someone at OSU and we have official word that it's a deer bone.  Whew!

Which is a good things, I don't like the thought of Shane and Jeanne having a pissed off ghost running around wanting his arm back.

ummm... I recant one statement.

from my last post: http://knightdiver.blogspot.com/2008/02/another-meme.html

I marked the following as an affirmative.

( x ) Been arrested

I forgot to delete that "x".

Here's my recant. NO... I have not been arrested.

So, If you're looking for dirt, you won't find any, b/c there's none to be dug up. I might have been close a couple of times, but not for anything serious. A speeding ticket here, a parking ticket there, a number of miscellaneous white collared crimes. (I'm joking...)

drunken_orgieHowever, If you think about it, I've been lucky. I have been to campus a number of times and you'd think that I might have been a participant in the drunken riots, car flipping, orgies.

But, alas... having kids w/ a strict bed time has me home, safe and sound, at a reasonable hour.

In general, I tend to be a good boy.

[In spite of what other people might say]

(Honestly, it's more like, I'm cautious enough that I don't ever let the cameras catch me in the act.)

Happy Friday!

Yeah, yeah... in defense of Holbrook, she did change her tune concerning her comment.

An old Anishinaabe Legend about how the turtle gets its shell goes something like this.  I've heard and read it different ways, but the idea is always the same.

Nanabozho (a spirit in common throughout Anishinaabe mythology) accidentally hurts Mishekae (turtle), who's sunning by a lake.  During the time the legend takes place the Mishekae was not known as we know turtles today, she had no shell and was all soft skin and bone.

Embarrassed and apologetic for his clumsiness, Nanabozho returns with a gift of protection.  He takes two large shell from the lake shore, placing one on top of the other and sandwiches Mishekae in between.

"You will never be injured again. Whenever danger threatens, you can pull your legs and head into the shell for protection."

Nanabozho then describe how the shell Mishekae wears symbolizes Mother Earth.  The carapace resembling the hills and mountains.  There's a reference on how the shell is divided into separate segments each uniquely different yet all connected.  All as one.

The legend has Nanabozho revealing what the turtle also symbolizes to the Anishnabek.

A turtle has four legs representing the cardinal directions, North, South, East and West.  The tail represents all the experiences, history, the lands that have been traveled.  While the head, points in the direction to follow, the future.

Additionally, because of Nanabozho's gift, the turtle is at home both on land and in the water.

A great site for other Native Americas legends can be found here.

Your day can't get any worse.

I know it's not nice to say, but many times than not, if you think you're having a bad day, chances are someone else is having a worse one.

So, don't be down.  Just take comfort in the fact that someone, somewhere is probably having a bad day, too.

The Beatles in Space.

February 4th was a big day in terms of Anniversaries.

It was the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Also, 50 years ago this week, The United States' first satellite, Explorer 1 was sent into orbit.

45 years ago, an international network of antennas were put together, marking the establishment of the Deep Space Network.  A network designed to help support missions to explore the universe.

And, 40 years ago, the Beatles recorded a song written by John Lennon named "Across the Universe".

To celebrate the anniversary of all these things, NASA has exchanged their standard Morse code message into space with "Across the Universe" by the Beatles.  The transmission is being directed towards the North Star and is traveling 186,000 miles a second.

How cool is that?

Check out the press release from NASA back in January.

Fiona Apple does a beautiful remake of "Across the Universe" for the movie Pleasantville.

Johari Window

Back in August 2006, I posted this blog on myspace about My Johari Window.

In case you don't want to jump over to myspace, here's a recap: The Johari Windows was invented by Luft and Ingham in the 1950s, as a model for mapping personality awareness.  Basically, there is a fixed listing of adjectives from which you select 5 or 6 words to describe yourself.  You then get your friends and colleagues to describe you from the same list.  The results is a grid of overlap and differences which you could see how other people see you versus how you see yourself.

If you know me, please contribute to my Johari Window here.  You could also see the results...  plus, if you want you could set one up for yourself.

I left my heart...

... actually, I didn't leave my heart anywhere.  If I did, chances are I would say I left it in New York versus San Francisco.  I'm more an East Coast boy than West Coast.

On a completely different note, this site has been a place I've been visiting often.

NZ

So, body in Columbus, heart in New York, brain in New Zealand?
